How to Fail at Laboratory Work (2026) is a multimedia installation about a late-nineteenth-century psychoacoustic apparatus, produced by Julian Chehirian during a residency at Pioneer Works in collaboration with D. Graham Burnett. The installation assembles period instruments—a recreation of Hugo Münsterberg's sound cage (produced by Jason Ressler), tuning forks, audio oscillators, a tachistoscope, and computer-controlled instrument arrays—into an operational model of the early psychological laboratory. Its subject is the historical apparatus through which attention became an object of measurement and control in the experimental mind sciences.
